Maritime’s Twin Transformation - Digitalization & Decarbonization
The maritime industry is at a turning point. With global mandates to reach net-zero by 2050, shipowners must cut emissions while meeting growing demand. At the same time, digitalization is reshaping the industry, and these two shifts are deeply connected.
Digitalization isn’t just about efficiency—it’s the foundation of a smarter, more sustainable maritime industry. Yet, despite these ambitions, vessels remain largely disconnected, with fragmented systems and siloed data. The industry needs a scalable, standardized digital infrastructure to bridge these gaps—one that powers digitalization and accelerates decarbonization.

Foundations of a Connected Maritime Future
Onboard’s Framework for Maritime Digitalization
-
The Industry Needs an Open Ecosystem
Maritime is highly fragmented, with proprietary, isolated solutions creating a patchwork of closed systems that don’t communicate. This slows progress, increases costs, and limits scalability. It’s neither sustainable nor efficient.
To truly transform maritime operations, the industry needs a standardized, open ecosystem—one that enables seamless data flow, integrates across stakeholders, and creates value for everyone, not just individual companies. Collaboration, not isolation, is the key to unlocking efficiency, transparency, and emissions reduction at scale.
-
Crew at the Heart of Maritime Operations
At Onboard, we believe the crew is the beating heart of maritime operations—yet they’re often overlooked in the race to embrace Connected Ships.
Digitalization should empower seafarers, not burden them with complexity. That’s why we put them front and center, ensuring our solutions enhance safety, communication, and operational efficiency without adding unnecessary workload. The real transformation happens when vessels and crew are connected—together.
-
Technology is Not Enough—It’s About Real Operational Impact
Technology itself doesn’t create value—the way it’s implemented and used does. Maritime companies don’t invest in digital tools for the sake of innovation; they invest in solutions that solve real operational challenges.
That’s why we don’t just provide technology—we ensure it works for crews, shore teams, IT, technical, operational, and compliance stakeholders alike. We bridge the gap between digitalization and real-world maritime challenges, ensuring seamless adoption, integration, and lasting impact.
Our Story
Co-founders Erwin Strik and Florus Wilming met while working on maritime projects in Southeast Asia. Frustrated by the industry’s slow progress in digitalization, they founded Onboard in 2016 after a major data-collection project highlighted the need for an open, scalable digital infrastructure.
As the son of an inland shipping captain, Erwin brings deep expertise in ship automation and electronics from SAM Electronics, Alphatron, Alewijnse Marine, and Royal IHC. Florus combines maritime operational experience with a master’s in Technology Management (University of Groningen), previously working with Royal IHC.
Together, with a skilled team and industry-leading partners, they are building an open, connected digital infrastructure—designed for the industry, by the industry.
